AL QUDS-The Zionist forces who attacked the people who were carrying the coffin at the funeral of Shireen Abu Aqleh, …
in occupied East Jerusalem, “are chillingly reminiscent of the brutality inflicted during the funerals of anti-Apartheid activists in Apartheid-era South Africa.” This is according to the Desmond Tutu Foundation, an icon of South African liberation, the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu quoted by Infopal.
In a statement released Saturday, Mamphela Ramphele, director of the Desmond Tutu Foundation, said, “The scenes in which members of the Israeli security forces attacked those carrying the coffin of Shireen Abu Aqleh, a journalist who was killed last Wednesday, are chillingly reminiscent of the brutality inflicted on mourners at the funerals of anti-Apartheid activists in South Africa during our struggle for freedom. As Archbishop Tutu taught us, perpetrators of violence and human rights violations may think they are furthering their own goals, but they are actually undermining their own humanity and integrity.”
Ramphele, who was partnered with anti-Apartheid activist Steve Biko, added that members of the Israeli security forces are “clearly responsible” for shooting Abu Aqleh in the head on Wednesday, May 11, while covering the news in the Zionist-occupied West Bank.
“Inflaming the situation further by attacking his funeral procession is like trying to put out flames […] with a can of gasoline,” he said.
Other South Africans also joined an international outcry after Israeli security forces attacked the funeral.
Renowned political analyst Eusebius McKaiser said the violence is all too familiar. “South Africans remember. The Apartheid police also liked to attack us at our funerals after they killed us,” he wrote.
