Yemen: Aden struck again

In addition to these internal divergences, which have grown with the resumption of relations between Riyadh and Doha, Ansarallah’s renewed anti-aircraft ballistic capabilities have been added.

On January 7, the Houthis’ media wing released images showing the wreckage of a battle drone of the Saudi-led coalition of aggression that had recently been shot down. The drone, a Turkish-made Karayel, was shot down over al-Jawf province in northern Yemen a day earlier with an unidentified surface-to-air missile. Recently released images show the wreckage of the downed UAV, including its optical system, manufactured by Hensoldt AG. The ARGOS-II system was designed for surveillance and targeting. It is equipped with a thermal imager and a multi-spectral television camera as well as a near-infrared laser pointer and illuminator. Hensoldt AG is a multinational company. However, it is based in Germany which has banned the sale of weapons to Saudi Arabia. Last month, Berlin extended the ban on arms exports to Saudi Arabia until the end of 2021.

A loud explosion was heard Thursday night in the Yemeni city of Aden, just outside a central prison in the southern port city.

The explosion occurred in an empty area and damaged a wall.

No one was injured or killed according to the latest assessment.

Images posted on social networks showed a plume of smoke that seemed to rise from outside the prison.

After Yemeni government officials, supported by Saudi Arabia, arrived in Aden on December 30, at least 25 people were killed and 110 injured in attacks.

“These explosions are part of the settling of scores by the occupying forces and their mercenaries to create chaos in the provinces they have taken control of,” said the governor of Aden.

Mohammad Ali al-Houthi, Chairman of the Yemeni Supreme Revolutionary Committee and member of Ansarallah’s Political Council, wrote on Twitter: “One country is making the deal and another wants to undermine it”.

A so-called “Riyadh 2” agreement was signed in November 2019 and provides for power-sharing in the south between Hadi’s government and separatists. But its provisions were hardly implemented and soon became obsolete.

In fact, the most important provisions of the agreement are the establishment of Mansour Hadi’s government in Aden within seven weeks, the deployment of military forces from the Ministry of Interior and Defense, a joint battle against the Ansarallah movement under the sponsorship of the Saudi coalition, the formation of a committee to oversee the Riyadh agreement under the supervision of Saudi Arabia and the appointment of 12 ministers to the Southern Transitional Council as allies of the United Arab Emirates in the next government, out of a total of 24 ministers in the government.
