The chieaa was famous for a rock kept inside, on which was impressed the imprint of the horse of San Toros.
Ankara – In recent days, the ancient church of Surp Toros (San Toros) of the early seventeenth century was demolished by order of private individuals who had come into possession of the structure, deconsecrated and abandoned for some time. Harsh condemnation of the Armenian opposition MP Garo Paylan, of the Peoples Democratic Party (HDP), which addressed a parliamentary interpellation to the Minister of Tourism and Culture on the matter.
Paylan points out that the place of worship, although unused for a long time for functions and converted in the last phase as a film set and wedding hall, had obtained recognition as a “permanent structure that requires protection”.
Addressing the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, he finally asks if “an investigation has begun on the demolition” of the church and why “the ministry itself has remained silent in the face of this havoc” carried out by private citizens.
