The Chinese military forces pursued this Saturday, December 19, a U.S. ship that had entered the Taiwan Strait in a provocative action.
According to Reuters, the Chinese military said in a statement that the country’s navy and air force had pursued a U.S. warship through the Taiwan Strait.
Such actions deliberately increase tensions in the Taiwan Strait because the Americans fear peace in the Strait and have a supportive approach towards Taiwanese independence forces that have seriously endangered the peace and stability of the Strait, the statement said.
However, the U.S. Navy claimed that the destroyer USS Mustin made “a normal crossing of the Taiwan Strait in accordance with international law” on Saturday.
“The passage of ships through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the U.S. commitment to the Indian Ocean and its free movement,” the U.S. Navy statement said.
Tensions between China and Taiwan have intensified in recent weeks following the visit of senior U.S. officials and diplomats to Taiwan. This comes at a time when Beijing considers Taiwan to be part of Chinese territory and believes that U.S. travel and arms sales to Taiwan violate its sovereignty and are against the policy of a unified China.
The Taiwanese Ministry of Defence recently announced in a statement that the Sukhoi-30s and J-10s of the Chinese army had entered the alleged “reaction zone” from the southwest. The Taiwanese Defense Ministry warned Beijing that its armed forces could react quickly and appropriately to such actions, while urging the Taiwanese people to remain calm. (TN)
