In view of the results of the Venezuelan parliamentary elections, the European Union and the Lima Group have withdrawn their recognition of the Venezuelan opposition leader.
EU foreign policy chief Joseph Borrell said Wednesday that Brussels no longer recognizes Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó, who illegally ran for president of the interim government.
Besides the European Union, the Lima Group, composed of 12 Latin American countries, did not mention Guaidó as the president of the interim government in its statement Tuesday about Venezuela’s new parliament.
Venezuela’s National Assembly, elected in December 2020, was sworn in Tuesday with a Chavista majority.
Almost two years after the coup d’etat in Venezuela led by Guaidó, who proclaimed himself “interim Venezuelan president” with the green light from the United States, his supporters suffered another defeat in Sunday’s parliamentary elections.
Venezuelan electoral authorities announced the victory of the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) with 67.6% of the 5.2 million votes cast in the parliamentary elections.
