Republican U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has fired the top Senate guard after supporters of outgoing U.S. President Donald Trump stormed the congressional building.
McConnell said, according to Friday’s Hill News, that he had called for the resignation of the commander of forces in charge of congressional security, Michael Stenger, and he subsequently resigned.
Earlier, Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer had said he would fire Michael Stenger, if he did not resign by Inauguration Day, when Democrats take control of the chamber.
In addition to Stenger, U.S. Congressional Police Chief Steven Sund announced Thursday that he would resign Jan. 16.
On Thursday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called on Sund and Stenger to resign over the incompetence and backtracking of the 2,000-member congressional security force against a small number of Trump supporters.
On Wednesday night, a group of Trump supporters gathered outside the building stormed the Congress building to prevent the U.S. president-elect’s election victory from being certified. At least five people were killed. Nine police officers were also injured.
