Washington’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara could hamper United Nations efforts to resolve the conflict and trigger a new spiral of violence in the region, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.
According to the Tass news agency, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced in a statement released Saturday, “With this decision, Donald Trump’s administration wants to weaken the framework and foundations of international law on determining the final and internationally recognized status of Western Sahara through a referendum in the territory.”
The Russian Foreign Ministry reiterated that the solution to the Western Sahara crisis is simply the resumption of direct negotiations between Morocco and the Polisario under UN mediation.
On Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump, as part of his meddling policy, announced on Twitter that Morocco and Israel had agreed to establish “full diplomatic relations.” For its part, the U.S. wants to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.
Western Sahara is a territory on the Atlantic coast of northwest Africa. For more than 35 years, there has been a conflict between Morocco and the Frente Polisario over the status of the territory.
