GAZA – The killing of a Palestinian Islamic Jihad leader at the hands of the Zionist regime was the trigger for the recent confrontation between …
Tel Aviv’s war machine and the resistance movement in the besieged Strip. “Israel wanted to isolate the movement and inflict a devastating blow that would weaken the group and pave the way to eliminate it; however, these calculations proved wrong and all ambitions in vain.” Says Yahya Sorbello, journalist, West Asia (Middle East) expert, analyst as well as the head of the website ilfarosulmondo.it,
Islamic Jihad’s steadfastness, efficiency and readiness to face a long battle put Israel to shame. Although the Israelis assassinated two of the movement’s prominent leaders, this changed nothing on the battlefield. Islamic Jihad continued to fire rockets at Israeli settlements.
Major Israeli-occupied cities, mainly Tel Aviv, were hit by a barrage of rockets from Gaza. Rockets continued to fall until the last moment before an Egyptian-mediated cease-fire went into effect.
But why did Israel start this battle? Sorbello explains, “It is clear that the Israelis are in bad shape politically. When their political system is in a stalemate they use the Palestinians as cannon fodder to help one Israeli party or another to seek advantages in the run-up to elections.
The Israelis attempted to drive a wedge between the Resistance movements by targeting only the leaders of Islamic Jihad and not Hamas. However, the Hamas movement was ready to respond and join Islamic Jihad if the situation called for it.
The Israelis thought they were sending a message to blackmail Lebanon and mainly Hezbollah to pressure it to accept what they put on the table in the face of the maritime problem with Lebanon.
Hezbollah’s secretary general, His Eminence sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, warned the Israelis not to make any mistakes or fall into their miscalculations with the Islamic Resistance.
As a result of this new battle in Gaza, Islamic Jihad and all factions of the Palestinian Resistance have demonstrated their steadfastness and unity. The situation did not escalate to the extent that Hamas had to intervene. Islamic Jihad, with its latest barrage of rockets flooding the Zionist settlements, gave an overwhelming show of strength to the Tel Aviv regime.
