The Palestinian Authority has called on the United Nations and the UN Security Council to protect Palestinians in the occupied West Bank from increasing attacks by Israeli troops and settlers.
U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the Security Council “must assume their responsibilities under international law and provide international protection to our people and their just and legitimate national rights,” the Palestinian Foreign Ministry said in a statement, the official Palestinian news agency Wafa reported Saturday.
The statement, issued after a sharp increase in Israeli military and settler attacks on Palestinians, condemned those attacks.
It added that Israeli settlers have intensified their attacks and acts of terror against the Palestinian civilians, against their lands and properties in the occupied West Bank, and East al-Quds (East Jerusalem).
“The escalation of settler attacks now dominates the scene on the ground in the occupied Palestinian territories and manifests itself in various forms of killing, damaging property, confiscating land, persecuting farmers, uprooting trees and killing livestock, among other forms of criminal escalation supported by the occupation army,” the statement added.
According to the ministry, the latest of these attacks occurred against the Khan al-Lubban al-Sharqiya archaeological site south of the northern West Bank city of Nablus.
The attack, the statement added, aimed to take over the site as part of Israel’s settlement expansion plans, while settlers also attacked many Palestinian historical and archaeological sites in order to seize them.
The State Department also called on the United Nations and the United Nations Security Council not to treat such attacks as normal and customary incidents, warning that their dangerous consequences for Palestinian rights must be taken into account.
More than 600,000 Israelis live in over 230 settlements established since Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories in the West Bank and East Jerusalem al-Quds in 1967.
According to human rights groups, sabotage and violence by extremist settlers against Palestinians and their property occurs daily throughout the West Bank.
