Nigeria: president fires all armed forces chiefs

VIEWS

Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari, has fired the heads of the country’s armed forces appointed in 2015 and in a surprise move also announced their replacements via Twitter. The Nigerian president wrote that he had “accepted the immediate resignations” of the chiefs and “thanked them all for their commitment to bringing lasting peace to Nigeria.”

Buhari gave no reason for this choice, which affects the army, navy, air force and defense staff. Nigeria continues to grapple with widespread national insecurity, including Boko Haram attacks and rampant kidnappings.
