WASHINGTON-NATO and the Pentagon have announced that they do not recognize the Donbass Republic’s referendum to join Russia.
“Mock referendums have no legitimacy and do not change the nature of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. This is a further escalation of Putin’s war. The international community must condemn this blatant violation of international law and strengthen support for Ukraine.” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg wrote this in a tweet.
The Pentagon also reacted to the announcement of referenda for annexation to Russia. It is “simply an information operation, intended to distract from the difficult situation Russian military forces are currently in.” This was said by Pentagon spokesman General Pat Ryder, stressing that that of referendums a typical move in Russia’s “playbook,” already implemented in 2014 with the annexation of Crimea. “No one will regard these sham referendums as credible, and the United States certainly will not recognize any result of any sham election,” he added.
According to the latest polls, at least 94 percent of Donetsk Republic citizens and 93 percent of Luhansk Republic residents plan to join Russia.
