The German government wants to reduce the number of soldiers for the Iraq mission by a maximum of 500 forces.
This was decided by the federal cabinet on Wednesday. German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer said that IS was continuing its terrorist activities “even during the Corona pandemic.” “Military pressure on IS must be maintained,” she stressed.
The Bundestag had approved a supplementary mandate for the withdrawal and some changes in March. Berlin had previously announced that it would officially continue its training activities in Iraq, but restrictions are being imposed due to the coronavirus outbreak.
There are currently about 700 German soldiers in Iraq. They are part of the so-called anti-IS coalition.
