The Chinese Foreign Ministry has warned the U.S. government against provocations after the passage of a U.S. warship through the Taiwan Strait.
On Thursday, the U.S. Pacific Fleet said the destroyer “USS John S. McCain” had transited the Taiwan Strait.
“Beijing is closely monitoring U.S. movements and has the capabilities to retaliate if necessary,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said.
This is the first time a U.S. warship has passed through the strait between Taiwan and China since Joe Biden took office.
Beijing considers Taiwan a part of China and views U.S. maneuvers and arms sales to Taiwan as a violation of its sovereignty and its “One China Policy.”
Although UN member states, such as the U.S., do not recognize Taiwan as an independent state, but Washington is practically trying to strengthen this island with military support, to which Beijing has repeatedly objected.
