The European Union has recalled its ambassador from Cuba because of an appeal to new U.S. President Joe Binden.
Spanish diplomat Navarro had previously signed an appeal to U.S. President Biden asking him to lift sanctions against Cuba.
Navarro should now explain in Brussels the reasons for his move, Peter Stano, spokesman for EU foreign affairs envoy Borrell, told the AFP news agency on Saturday.
“We consider the ambassador unworthy of the high office he holds and has been entrusted with, and we call on you to arrange for his immediate replacement,” reads a letter sent to the EU foreign affairs envoy by 16 MEPs from various parties.
The United States has placed Cuba under the strictest sanctions for nearly six decades under baseless pretexts.
Washington’s hostile attitude toward Havana has been criticized by international institutions.
