EU extends Russia sanctions

The European Union (EU) has extended punitive measures against some sectors of the Russian economy for another six months.

According to Novosti, the European Union (EU) extended punitive measures against Russia, first adopted in 2014, for six more months. The European Union leaders agreed on this eight days ago in Brussels. But they also had to be rubber-stamped by the Council of the European Union.

A statement issued Thursday in Brussels noted that the Council of the European Union has agreed to extend current restrictive measures in certain sectors of the Russian economy until July 31, 2021.

Previously imposed restrictions expire on January 31, 2021.

The EU punitive measures were introduced following the downing of a Malaysian airliner with 298 people on board over eastern Ukraine in July 2014. It was shot down by pro-Russian separatists, according to investigations. The Ukraine conflict continues to this day, as do the EU’s economic sanctions.
