The new transitional government is tasked with leading the country to scheduled elections on Dec. 24 after nearly a decade of civil war. Who will take the three-member presidency and the prime ministership of the planned transitional government will be decided by the 75 participants in the domestic political dialogue forum meeting in Switzerland next week.
Stephanie Williams, head of the UN Support Mission for Libya (UNSMIL), had already presented the list of candidates’ names at a press conference on Jan. 28.
The process of transitioning to an elected government, drafting a constitution and building a new state, which began in Libya in late October, is taking place under difficult circumstances.
If the UNSMIL diplomats’ plan works out, Libya would then have a constitutional government for the first time since 2011.
Chaos has reigned in the desert state since the overthrow of long-term strongman Muammar al-Gaddafi in 2011 with Western help. Numerous militias are fighting for influence in the oil-rich country.
