Despite the fact that the Republic of Cyprus has signed an agreement with Russia to allow its navy ships access to the port of Limassol,…
Nicosia banned 5 Russian vessels from docking due to the Ukrainian war. These were frigates and support boats that would be docked for resupply purposes. This is reported by Sicurezzainternazionale.
Following Russia’s attack of Ukraine, Cyprus, along with all other EU countries, imposed a ban on Russian ships entering ports in the bloc. The move aims to strengthen maritime restrictions after the air traffic disruption. The Foreign Ministry in Nicosia informed Russia in a note verbale that, “due to the depressing developments in Ukraine,” the agreement on the provision of facilities and permission to moor is suspended. This has forced Russian ships to seek another port for refueling, which is not indicated by Cypriot sources.
Cyprus’ permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Andreas Hadjichrysanthou, while speaking at the 11th Special Emergency Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on March 3, said Cyprus adds its voice to the condemnation of Russian aggression against Ukraine. “We deplore the suffering and loss of life, as well as the massive displacement caused by the hostilities, a consequence of the war that Cyprus has known all too well for nearly 50 years,” the Permanent Representative said. Cyprus, Hadjichrysanthou continued, “condemns any violation of international peace and security carried out, through military action, by any state, against the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of another.”
