China warns Biden not to start a “new cold war”

Chinese President Xi Jinping warns his US counterpart against forming a coalition against the Asian giant and starting a new cold war.

“Creating clans or starting a new cold war, rejecting, threatening or intimidating others, provoking isolation or economic strangulation will only cause greater division in the world, and even lead to confrontation,” the Chinese leader warned on Monday in a tacit message to the new U.S. administration headed by Joe Biden.

In remarks delivered at the virtual World Economic Forum in Davos, Xi warned that choosing the path of confrontation – be it a cold war, a hot war, a trade war or a technological war – would only lead to suffering for the peoples of the world.

These statements come amid escalating tensions between Beijing and Washington. The Biden Administration has already expressed its support for the “firm stance” taken by his predecessor, Donald Trump, vis-à-vis China and has deemed a coalition necessary to confront the Asian giant.

Moreover, the United States has pledged to continue to support Taiwan, an island considered by China to be an inseparable part of its territory. In the same vein, it has sent its aircraft carriers to the South China Sea.

On the other hand, the Chinese president has expressed his country’s defense of multilateralism, stressing that history has shown that countries that choose unilateralism “will always fail”.

“Those who push for protectionism are locking themselves in a dark house. They have escaped the rain and clouds outside, but they have also lost the light and air. A trade war will only cause suffering on both sides,” he added.

Faced with such a situation, he called for macroeconomic cooperation to promote a balanced and joint growth of the world economy, at a time when the concert of countries is suffering the worst recession since the end of World War II, due to the pandemic of the coronavirus, the cause of COVID-19.
