Combined forces of the Central African Republic’s army, Russian mercenaries and UN soldiers repelled an attack by the rebel group Coalition of Patriots for Change (CPC) on the outskirts of the capital Bangui.
Residents are fleeing the affected suburbs of PK9 and PK12 to the city center, which is considered safer. The latest attack comes after rebels launched an offensive promising to march on the capital over last month’s disputed presidential elections, in what the government called a coup attempt. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the attack, calling on “all parties to stop the violence and engage in meaningful dialogue.”
