Canada classifies US group “Proud Boys” as terrorists
aThe Canadian government has placed the far-right U.S. group “Proud Boys,” which supports former U.S. President Donald Trump, on the terror list alongside terror groups such as al-Qaeda and the IS terror militia.
The group, along with 12 others, will be classified as an ideologically motivated violent extremist group in the future, Canadian Security Minister Bill Blair announced Wednesday.
The far-right group is a “serious and growing threat to Canadian society,” Blair said.
The Canadian government described the Proud Boys as a neo-fascist group. Its members espouse misogynistic, Islamophobic, anti-Semitic and xenophobic views, as well as the ideology of supposed white supremacy, it said.
“They openly encourage, plan and direct violent activities against those they believe are opposed to their ideology and political beliefs,” the Canadian government said.
This allows criminal proceedings for terrorist crimes to be brought against members and supporters of the group and assets to be frozen.
Canada is the first country to classify the group as a terrorist group. The Canadian Parliament already agreed to put the Proud Boys group on the terrorist list a month ago.
The “Proud Boys” are one of the far-right groups in the U.S. involved in the attack on the Capitol by supporters of former U.S. President Donald Trump on January 6, 2020. Five people were killed and several others injured during the riots and occupation of the Congress by the Trump supporters.
