The Burmese military assured today that it will protect and respect the Constitution.
Military leaders sought to blame domestic and international rganizations and media, “because they misinterpreted the speech of the commander-in-chief and formulated their own point of view.”
The army statement reads, referring to a Wednesday speech by Armed Forces Chief Min Aung Hlaing in which he mentioned the possibility of revoking the country’s constitution.
In recent weeks, the army has reported widespread irregularities in last November’s elections, which saw the triumph of Aung San Suu Kyi’s “National League for Democracy.”
The Electoral Commission has denied the existence of fraud, although it has admitted some inaccuracies in the electoral lists. On Monday, the Parliament that emerged from the November vote will be inaugurated.
