Faced with rising refugee numbers, Bulgaria has sent 350 soldiers to its border with Turkey.
Bulgarian Defense Minister Georgi Panayotov said in an interview with Bulgarian broadcaster bTV on Monday that the soldiers had arrived for their mission on the Bulgarian-Turkish border to support border police and prevent refugees from entering the country. He added that 350 soldiers with 40 equipment units had been sent.
According to the Bulgarian Interior Ministry, more than 6,500 migrants were detained from January to September after entering Bulgaria illegally. Further data from the ministry read that the number of refugees who arrived in Bulgaria from January to September 2021 more than tripled compared to the same period last year.
In August, Bulgaria’s parliament voted to send between 400 and 700 soldiers to the border to help build a border fence between Bulgaria and Greece and Turkey, respectively.
