A little-known militant group calling itself the “Guardians of Blood Brigade” staged a rocket attack, targeting an American military base in Erbil, northern Iraq, killing one American contractor and injuring eight others. According to the Kurdish security sources, the attack occurred at 9:15 pm (local time) and allegedly carried out by a pickup truck equipped with a 24-tube 107-mm rocket launcher. The attack resulted in the destruction of a Beechcraft King Air 350 aircraft and also an American attack drone.
The unexpected developments in northern Iraq suggest a few issues which are worthy of further investigation:
- Even though last night’s attack was carried out with the most basic weapons, the severe losses sustained by the American occupying forces were indeed substantial. In other words, humiliating the United States, which labels itself as the so-called world superpower, with an unsophisticated weapon, demonstrates the sheer weakness of the American Army against the harassing attacks of Iraqi resistance groups, especially given the fact that the much-lauded C-RAM automatic machine gun failed to protect the American base.
- In early 2020, the United States desperately sought to keep its troops safe by repositioning the American military personnel at two remote military bases, the Ain al-Asad airbase in Anbar and Al-Harir military base, north of Erbil. In the next step, the Americans attempted to prolong their occupation of Iraq by endorsing their protégé, Mustafa Al-Kadhimi’s bid to assume the office of Iraq’s prime minister and also supporting General Abdel Wahab al-Saadi to tighten his grip on Iraq’s Counterterrorism Service (CTS). However, last night’s successful attack unleashed by the Iraqi resistance rendered all US efforts moot.
- Joe Biden is a veteran politician that represents the entirety of the American political establishment, and for this very reason, he is more concerned regarding the US military presence in strategic parts of the world (including Iraq) than his predecessor Donald Trump. The US ex-president wanted to maintain Washington’s hegemony in the Middle-East by assassinating the commanders of the Iraqi resistance, but all in vain.
It remains to be seen how the new occupants of the Oval Office would challenge the deteriorating situation in Iraq.
Today, it is widely believed that the Iraqi resistance, by carrying out last night’s massive onslaught, sent out a strategic message to the Americans, and that is a serious determination exists on the part of all Iraqis to expel the American occupying forces from their fatherland. It seems the new US administration must either admit defeat by leaving Iraq or prepare for more casualties and, as a result, further domestic discontentment.
